ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Darren Thiesfeld
Writer. Traveler. Storyteller.
THE TRAVELER
I've spent most of my life moving between places, careers, and versions of myself.
I've visited roughly eighty countries and lived and worked on four continents. Along the way, I've lived in Thailand and China, traveled through places most people only see on a map, and collected the people, mistakes, adventures, and stories that eventually became No Mud, No Lotus.
For years, I thought I was simply traveling.
Looking back, I was searching for something I couldn't yet name.
THE PROFESSIONAL
My career has never followed a straight line.
I've worked in film and entertainment, including MGM and Netflix, directed international business in Beijing, managed a dive resort in Thailand, and built global operations, sourcing, and supplier networks across countries and cultures.
I've also returned to documentary film, helping distribute Reflections of Courage, an award-winning film about my family's survival of the Holocaust.
I've never been particularly good at staying in one lane.
Looking back, I'm beginning to think that's part of the story.
THE WRITER
No Mud, No Lotus grew out of a lifetime of stories I didn't realize were connected.
Old journals. Photographs. Emails. Memories I'd carried for years. Eventually they became a 31-chapter memoir about travel, reinvention, belonging, and the long way around to understanding yourself.
Now I'm writing about what happens after the manuscript is finished—from beta readers and editing to literary agents and the search for a path to publication.
The book took years to live.
Writing it was only the beginning.
