Part 5- Why I Hired a Professional Beta Reader (and Why You Might Too)
“What happens when you hand ten people the most personal story you've ever written—and ask them to tell you the truth?”
For the first time, Darren is handing No Mud, No Lotus to ten beta readers and asking them to read beyond the writing—to tell him what they felt, where they were confused, what stayed with them, and what they think the book is actually about. This is the beginning of an experiment in letting other people see the story and discovering what they see that the author can't.
Part 1-I Wrote A Novel! Now What?
“The End” was just the title of a much longer chapter.
Darren finished his memoir and discovered that finishing the manuscript was only the beginning. Now he is navigating beta readers, professional editing, publishing paths, submission materials, and the surprisingly long road between completing a book and getting it published.
Part 3- Why I Finally Decided to Write This Book
I didn’t sit down one day and decide to write a memoir. If anything, the book decided it was time, and I was just the last person to find out.
After years of collecting places, people, mistakes, and stories, something finally became clear: there was a thread running underneath all of them. A quiet house, five years of unfinished memories, and a trip to Peru in 2023 gave me enough space to finally see it.
No Mud, No Lotus began when I stopped running from the question my life had been asking me for years—and started writing down the answer.
Part 4- The Beta Reader Experiment

DELETED SCENE
“Some stories don't make it into the final book.”
This one involves a backgammon game in 1970s Chicago, a determined stockbroker, a Qantas travel agent, a honeymoon in Fiji, and a stonefish that nearly ended very differently. When Darren's father was poisoned by one of the world's most venomous fish, his response was memorable: he asked his new wife to cut off his foot. It's a family story that's been retold for more than fifty years—and one Darren liked too much to leave on the cutting-room floor.
